American epic historical movie Gone with the Wind produced by David O. Selznick is one of the most popular romantic movies all over the times. Nominated in thirteen categories, it won eight positions including nominations such as Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. The simplicity of sound and visual effects in the past century put the play of the actors in the first place in creating the images and moods of the movie. The actors’ contribution to the creation of the film helped to present the life of the time with the variety of emotional life situations and pure feelings of the characters. The contribution of Vivien Leigh to the work on the movie really deserved the Best Actress Award for her role of Scarlett O'Hara. The story about a manipulative woman and a naughty man became the symbol of love during hard historical periods. The work of producer David O. Selznick demonstrates a turbulent romance during the American Civil War and Reconstruction periods. Unknown actress Vivien Leigh won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her work on the image of a woman struggling against the obstacles of life. She was 25 when she appeared as a sixteen-year-old Scarlett (at the beginning of the movie). However, her excellent play helped the actress to create the image of a young and naïve girl who developed with the movie events into a strong woman. David O. Selznick searched for the actress who could be a “devil charged with electricity.” Vivien Leigh became the one who managed to make sparks during the film scenes. Her physical actions and the capability to feel the emotions of the protagonist helped the actress to demonstrate the emotions and feelings of Scarlet in different life situations. Later in the film, we see a woman who is ready to kill protecting her father’s land of Tara. The tragic events in the life of the protagonist changed Scarlet’s understanding of life values. Vivien feels these changes and follows them using another tone of voice, more confident and sharp movements, and direct glances. The voice of the changed character became the means to tell about herself and present her in new society. However, the actress easily demonstrates the contradictive feelings of her character towards her husband Rhett Butler. Emotions of curiosity and favor changed to discontent, irritation, and jealousy in different scenes. The performance of the actress is perfect when she demonstrates the attempts of capricious Scarlett to hide her real feelings and emotions. The viewers see the anxiety of the woman for the destiny of her close people. The death of her only real friend Melanie Hamilton one more time shows the strength of Scarlet’s character and the flawless play of the actress. Vivien’s performance seemed to be based on the intuitive response of the actress who presented a strong woman with a lot of sad events in her past and more challenges in her future. For sure, the usage of cinematographic techniques played also an important role in the integrated image of the depicted people and events. However, the ability of Vivien Leigh made her character realistic and symbolic. Thanks to the work of the actress the role of Scarlett O'Hara became the most coveted role in the history of cinematography. Gone with the Wind is one of the most highly anticipated American movies of all time. The vivid events and bright emotions of the picture characters made it the most iconic pictures in cinema history. The performance of Vivien Leigh playing protagonist of the movie made the actress recognizable for her creation of the image of the strong personality of a woman.
